Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are high quality work-based training programmes for those who want to develop their future career prospects. They combine paid work with on-the-job training, qualifications and progression.
Taking an apprenticeship
The Apprenticeship programme is known as a framework and consists of:
A work-based qualification (usually an NVQ)
A technical certificate – or other knowledge based elements
Functional skills: English, Maths and ICT
Employee Rights and Responsibilities and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
There are different levels of apprenticeship available for those aged 16 and over:
Intermediate Apprenticeships
Typically, for an Intermediate Apprenticeship you will need a number of GCSEs grades A* to C with, ideally, English and maths being two of those subjects.
Advanced Apprenticeships
For an Advanced Apprenticeship you will need at least 5 GCSEs with grades A* to C (4-9 on the new GCSE grading system) with, ideally, English and maths being two of those subjects. Advanced Apprenticeships offer you qualifications up to Level 3.
Higher education and Higher and Degree Apprenticeships
Your career doesn’t have to stop after an Advanced Apprenticeship. You can go on to study at a higher level, you can.
Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16. Entry requirements vary depending on the sector and the job but generally you will be expected to have at least 3 GCSEs at Grades D or above.
